Niger State Government Launches New Road Rehabilitation Project to Boost Economic Activities
Minna, Niger State.
The Niger State Government has officially launched a massive road rehabilitation project aimed at improving transportation networks across the state and boosting local economic activities. The initiative, which began this week, covers key routes linking Minna, Bida, Kontagora, and Suleja.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Minna, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago emphasized the importance of good road infrastructure in driving commerce and attracting investment. He noted that the state’s economy relies heavily on agriculture and trade, and that better roads will make it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets.
“This project is not just about roads; it’s about connecting communities and enabling growth. We are determined to ensure that every local government area in Niger State enjoys improved infrastructure,” the governor said.
The rehabilitation project, valued at ₦25 billion, is being handled by multiple local contractors to ensure speed and accountability. The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure Development confirmed that all roads under the project will be asphalted, with proper drainage and solar-powered streetlights where necessary.
Residents and business owners have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely intervention that will ease travel difficulties and reduce transportation costs.
A local transporter, Musa Abdullahi, expressed optimism:
“We’ve suffered from bad roads for years. This project gives us hope that things will finally change.”
The state government also disclosed plans to create job opportunities for youths through the construction process, encouraging local participation and skill development.
The road rehabilitation project is expected to be completed within 18 months, with periodic updates to be provided to the public.
